The tribute chapter 45. Keys
Invert couldn't take the screams anymore. If these experiments succeeded, who knew how many more innocent people would be dragged into this torture. He had to do something, so he dried up his tears, and waited beside the door. The witch was there for a while, working on her pet projects almost absentmindedly, as if their screams of pain were nothing but gusts of wind through the barred windows. Invert wondered how many people in the castle could hear them. the king probably had this room soundproofed though, knowing him. Invert grit his teeth. That monster. He would give up his own children for an experiment like this. The witch yawned loudly a he was thinking, before trotting out of the room and up a staircase adjacent to the windows. He had been down those stairs many times before, but never into this room. He crept in, and approached the now unconscious boy. The manacles on his wrist were made of gold, and Invert knew what that did to the the princes. He looked around, before spotting the keys laying on a leta table. He avoids looking at the other red stained tools that sat of theat table. Bringing the keys over to Ace, he noticed the boy was gaining consciousness. "I-invert?" he said shakily, his voice faint and weak from all the screaming. "I'm going to get you, and you brother far away from here. Im done letting your father hurt people." He held out the keys. Ace looked up at him, and smiled faintly, before falling back out of consciousness. Invert unlocked the cuffs, and pulled them off carefully. He then noticed the wing cuffs. Of course the wings were new, along with the other features Invert could only describe as dragon-like, but the cuffs were keeping Ace from spreading his wings and disrupting the witch. Invert unlocked those too before carrying the boy out of the room and into a dark supply closet. Invert that went back for Lucas. Ace woke up in the dark. His hand immediately went to his wrists, but he did not find and more burning there. He shifted into a sitting position, but the nerves in his new wings told him it was a small space. And it was very uncomfortable. He remembered Invert, and being rescued, and he was grateful. But where was that knight now? Suddenly, he heard footsteps outside of the door, and hushed whispering. He pulled his wings over his face in reaction, and held very still. Ace heard the door crack open. "pssst, Ace! It's me, Lucas!" Ace pulled his wings open to see his brother standing in the doorway. He grinned as Lucas offered Ace a hand up. Ace took it, and the two embraced when he had stood up. Looking over Lucas's shoulder, he could see Invert waiting behind them. He smiled and pulled away. "We need to go now, brother." Lucas smiled, and nodded.
