The tribute chapter 21. Stairs

Gracie didn't know why she had been told to come here. The other maids had seemed jumpy this morning, but they wouldn't tell her why. A knight came up to her in the hall later, saying that she was to go to this room downstairs. Gracie had nodded, and walked with him till he showed her the staircase. He handed her a lantern. "Name's Invert. If you make it out, maybe i'll see you around." Gracie gulped, and nodded. She lit the lantern with the match he gave her, and started down the stairs. She turned around to ask him if he knew where this went, but Invert was gone. She sighed, and returned to walking. The stairs were uneven, some were so shirt she almost tripped, and some were so tall it felt like she was climbing down a slide. Each step was magnified by the echoes of her footsteps, the gentle hum of the lantern and her tail brushing the ground. The bottom of the stairs were invisible, shrouded by shadows and uncertainty. As Gracie slowly crept closer, the light shed from the lantern flickered out. She was completely surrounded by the pitch darkness. When her eyes widened to take in more light, she finished walking down the steps. There was a rotting wooden door at the base, coated in moss and mold. The door handle had long ago fallen off, based on the soggy wood around the broken hole where it should have been. Gracie sighed, and reacher her hand inside the hole to open it from the inside. She wasn't an idiot, Gracie made sure there was nothing in the general area inside the door, she used her lanterns light. When she had eased her fear a bit, she reached inside and clicked the door handle open. The door creaked when she pushed it wider, and left cobwebs in its wake. Gracie entered slowly, pushing back the darkness with the one small light she had. The walls around her curved into an arch, and they were coated in green slime, and a liquid she couldn't quite see the color of. Gracie moved closer to one of the walls, and froze in shock. In the lantern light, you could see the red stains on the walls. She turned around to run back to the door, bt there was a figure standing there. She saw her own lantern light reflecting off of their pearly white grin, before the shadow slammed the door, and turned the lock.
