long rant lol
tw animal death, our ffa sucks man. and im not even going to go into the new rules, im just gonna talk about the animals. last night, i was walking around and happened to go with my friend group to the pig barn and watch a kid have her pig get shots bc its been sick for the past few months (it sounded like death). the dad was there to help, the teacher was just supervision (i think she shouldve given the shot personally, the dad was giving the shot) and theres not like a chute or anything for pigs to get shots, so we use a snare, similar to a dog catching pole but it goes around their snout and hold them up and them give the shot in the shoulder, the first one went fine, had a bent needle but she was just acting fine still. then the second shot came, it was on the opposite shoulder, and once they finished that one, a lot of blood started coming out (now, im no professional, and i know nothing about pigs, but if the first shot wasnt bleeding, why was the second so much?) and spilling down her neck, for a second or two she seemed fine and they were getting ready to leave her pen but then the pig started going crazy and trying to get up and walk but was basically flopping on the ground like a fish out of water, and that isnt an exaggeration. the pig was having a seizure. about five seconds later, her pig was laying still on the ground. it was dead. none of us knew what to do. my teacher did reach for her phone to call the vet. now i understand, and every kid there understands, all those animals will be sold for meat, but it is way different from hauling your animal on a trailer and seeing it for the last time than to see it die right in front of your eyes. i havent experienced it, but i cant even imagine her pain, and watching it all. and she was only three weeks out to show. after four months of raising that pig. our ffa is horrible with animal deaths, i think so personally. its not that we have a million die each time but, we have at least 1 goat and 1 lamb and 1 pig die each year. i wont even mention how many rabbits have died, in fact, we have absolutely no meat rabbits to sell this year bc theyre either 1 still born 2 accidentally killed (ex: a doe stepped on all her babies) 3 died soon after birth. usually we have about a handfull to sell, but we dont have anything this year as for rabbits. i cant speak for the lambs, goats, turkeys, chickens, pigs, or rabbits this year, since i do not raise them. but i know every year lambs come with ringworm (they usually leave a marking/scar on them) and ringworm is so frustating to deal with, its nothing dangerous or lethal, although it is zoonotic (ive had it twice from my past steer) and its not an actual worm. anyways, this years steers are so much worse than last years. i can promise you every single cow in that barn and pasture has had pneumonia AT LEAST once. i was the lucky one to have my steer get it twice, and my heifer is possibly getting it too. we havent had any steers, cows, or heifers die as i know of in my years being here, the only one i can think of is this heifers calf dying once born because 1 the kid wasnt there 2 the teacher wasnt there either. but these cows are so fucking sick. he was sick for months, coughing every second, lethargic, unclear snot everyday, not eating, and losing a ton of weight. of course, i called the vet (canceled on me twice without letting me know, thats our 'on call' vet) and he came out almost a week ago and hes getting better. but anyways, back to the point. this ffa literally does not give a shit about your animal. all these cows came with that and it spread to the others. its so hard to get a vet out there and its so hard to get medication from the teachers. i ended up buying my own medication They Had In Their Office because they just wouldnt let me. either way, this ffa sucks and i just want the best for my cows and me.
