The tribute chapter 25. Gold

Ace was running again. He had been having this same nightmare every night. It was always the same, always the same. The dark halls that appear when he opens his eyes, the slowly descending waves of molten gold. These dreams had started when his father, King Fusion, had branded Ace and his brother Lucas. They had never stopped. Even though he had been having this dream for years, the fear was always the same. It always terrified him. Ace would always wake up in the same dark hallway, it was the hallway in the castle where the branding room was. He would always feel a tug to get up off the floor, and open the door. He would suddenly be in the middle of a gray room. His father would be standing on the other side, grinning wider than a human face would allow. There were no windows, no doors. Just gray. Ace would blink once, and the walls would be covered in gold. The one thing he was allergic too. This wasn't like a cute-kitten-sneeze allergy. If he touched gold, it would burn. Painfully. Ace always ran to the same corner, he always curled up into a ball. His clothes would change into a bloodstained rag, and the walls would paint the family crest onto every wall. Liquid gold melted down the walls, splattered on the floors. His footsteps made smaller splashes, and his hands made prints if he slipped and needed to steady himself. When he was on the ground, the pain began. He felt the brand but it was everywhere. Invisible rods would burn his skin. Over and over and over until he couldn't scream any more. He would try to make it stop but there was nothing to stop. He watched as the marks were permanently melded into his skin. A shadow then stood over him, throwing the sparkling yellow dust onto him. Its burns were like needles, small and fierce, like pinpricks of light that bit and pinched. Tears rolled down his face, and the pain would never stop. He sat alone in that room, all the while the gold dripped down until there was no gray anymore. He felt it drip over him, choking and drowning him. It burned everywhere, coated his everywhere. He couldn't breathe. And it HURT. His mind went blank, and Ace woke up in his bead, coated in sweat for the fifth time that week.
