my thoughts on gear 5
i know no one fuckin cares but im gonna put it out there anyway first of all from a writing standpoint, gear 5 is the most creative thing ive seen in like forever. having the powerup come out of joy and laughter rather than anger and rage is such a GOOD IDEA. Its also perfect for luffys character and the themes of one piece as a whole. the animation was also insane ... mostly around the second half. The whole cartoonish style was done really well, I heard someone say that this episode was even more goofy than the manga, I havent read the manga but if thats true then they did really well with the style. I must admit there was a stretch near the end of the episode where the cuts were a little fast and i didnt really know what the fuck was going on but it doesnt mean the animation was bad. it doesnt take away from the experience at all. HOWEVER, the pacing kinda sucked (as does all one piece episodes so im not really suprised). There was aliot of flashbacks and re-used footage which was kinda shitty. The directing was really good, the storyboards were amazing but again it wasnt perfect because of the pacing. also the sound effects. I really like that they used those cartoonish sound effects but i wish there was MORE of them. One of my biggest gripes with toei is their sound design is shit. i remember when zoro vs king came out, theres this cut where zoro slashes a bunch of dragons and they use like fuckin 1 sword sounds for the entire thing. the soundTRACK on the other hand was epic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KJtld91gzU this rant was longer than it needed to be great episode, ep 1015 and 1062 are still better (1072 might surpass those two)
