seisea, a very low ranking merling, was given a gift of travelling to the surface and becoming a messenger. near every merling in the water were furious, how could such a low merling get such a prestigious job. to become a proper messenger, you get the sear of tears on your left cheek. a burn/scar in the shape of a tear basically. during her sear ceremony, the people in charge of searing her decided to sear her right eye as they were angry thinking she wasn't worthy to be a messenger. they burnt her eye out and did the proper sear under it. messengers tend to show off this scar, as a sign of pride. seisea hides it as it's a reminder that she will never be truely accepted as a messenger.
