Culture Colors have always been everywhere They all mean very different things One particular combination of colors is so important to me That is the rainbow A rainbow means safety A rainbow means wonder and imagination A rainbow means pride I look for rainbows everywhere I go And create them along the way There are offshoots of the rainbow And offshoots of those But the rainbow is one overarching shield Protecting all of us Even if some of us don’t know it Or believe it The rainbow is there And we have to unite under it And unite with others Because the rainbow is us And we have to protect each other The rainbow will always be there So, let’s embrace it Five big events in my life The first really big event in my life started with loud noise Screaming and yelling and the shattering of objects That shattered my “perfect” family The family that fit every good suburban stereotype A mom, a dad, a cat, a dog, a sister, a brother It was destined to fail And so, my world broke And i tried to cling to anything But there was nothing there Not yet at least The second big event was a sweet one, Tinged with the taste of puke Rainbows flying from the flagpoles While i was holed up, sick As my family was gone once again Doing things for the greater good At least I had my books The third big event was the last time I moved houses Finally, a stable place to hang my coat Even though everytime a train comes by, I can feel the house shake I moved schools here too Tried to make new friends It was scary So I slowly started to close in Only trusting the words of the books i read THe Fourth big event was a tossing into an even bigger school I had good grades still But people I had been friends with Started to leave, as I was too scared to socialize Again, I read everything I could As my sight got even worse The fifth big event is middle school I opened up a bit But not enough I still would prefer to curl up And smell all the nice smells of the past And imagine all of the stories there could be I don’t understand I don’t understand Why people hate others for no reason except they’re different Why everything has to hurt all of the time Why people can fall in love so easily Most of all I don’t understand why there are so many people who just ear others down so that they can get up when they could build even more of a solid foundation by working together I don’t understand why there has to be a status quote I dont understand why people can’t see the beauty in diversity, all of the different ways of doing things. I do understand The patterns that repeat themselves over and over, making the earth turn How everything has been corroded with fear How we need to rebuild, with everyone in mind this time Rhetorical Question I wonder how human connection works? There’s probably some cool science about it I’ve never really been good at it There seems to be something I’m missing
